2 men arrested by police for raping infant

The rape victim was sent on an errand by her mother when she fell into the hands of the rapists, who took her to an uncompleted building.

Solomon Arase

Two men, Yahaya Umar and Muhammed Auwal, have been arrested by the Kaduna State Police, for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl.
They were arrested on June 13, 2016, according to the spokesperson for the state command, DSP Abubakar Zubairu .

Zubairu said, “The duo, aged 67, and 30-year-old respectively, were arrested following a complaint by the parents of the girl.”
“Auwal, who was the parent’s neighbour, was arrested after medical personnel confirmed an earlier alleged rape on the same minor.”
“The suspects would soon appear in court,”

Hindatu Mohammed , the mother of the infant said her daughter had just returned from school, when she sent her on an errand.

It was during the court of this that a boy came to report that her daughter has been raped, and the culprit apprehended.

She said, “One boy came to my house to inform me that my daughter has been raped and that a woman who was passing-by caught the old man in the act in an uncompleted building within the area and she called for help which resulted to his arrest.”

“So, I went out with my co-wife to see for myself after which we reported the case at Tudun Nupawa Police Station.”

“On arriving at the station, we were informed that my daughter had been taken to hospital to ascertain if she was actually raped.”
“The police personnel later returned and confirmed that rape actually took place and I was asked to pay N500 for fuel, which I did.”

“I am so afraid that she might be infected with HIV and AIDS and I was told that after the doctor’s investigation, it was discovered that she had earlier been raped by another person and it was our neighbor, Muhammed Auwal that my daughter identified.”

“I have spent N8, 000 so far but we are yet to receive any drug; we are only using natural herbs to heal her from injuries inflicted on her.”
“I am calling on the security agencies to give my daughter justice because people are calling and asking me to forgive them”.

The cases of rape against infants have soon become a common thing. Parents have been advised by state security agencies to keep vigilant and monitor their children more closely.

Oyo Students, Traders, Appeal To Labour To End Strike

Student groups, traders and artisans have joined others in appealing to the labour unions in Oyo State to end the ongoing strike for academic activities in public schools to resume.
A peace rally was organised by several artisan groups and student bodies in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.
The aim of the protesters was to sue for continued peace, an end to the ongoing labour strike and garner support for the education policy of government.

Traders, artisans and students in their hundreds converged on the historic Mapo Hill and moved through major streets halting vehicular and human traffic in the process as they sang songs of peace and cooperation in the process.

The crowd moved around from Mapo and ended up at the secretariat where the Governor received them.
Some of the leaders of groups represented at the rally spoke on the need to eschew violence and appealed to labour to end the ongoing strike.
Addressing the mammoth crowd at the secretariat, the Governor Abiola Ajimobi applauded the peaceful rally and charged them to continue to educate the people about government’s policy especially on education, stating emphatically that no school is up for sale in Oyo State.

He charged those present to continue to educate the people and shun violence as the brigandage of yesteryear will not be allowed back into the state.
Gov. Ajimobi further appealed to labour to return to work to give room for further dialogue not only on the education policy but to also find ways of addressing the non-payment of salaries of workers.
Labour had held a similar rally on June 16 calling for a reversal of government’s intention to involve the private sector in public school administration in the state.

NUPENG Suspends Strike In Rivers State

Fuel queues will now disappear in filling stations across Rivers State as the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its 12-day-old strike.
NUPENG had on June 9 embarked on an indefinite strike in solidarity with more than 150 of its members who were unlawfully sacked by five oil companies in Rivers and Bayelsa State.

The Acting Eastern Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, Charles Aleto, announced the suspension on Monday night in Port Harcourt.
He directed petroleum tanker drivers to immediately commence the loading of petrol.

On his part, the National Industrial Relations Officer of NUPENG, Bassy Harry directed all petroleum deports to load trucks servicing Rivers State first before any other State.

Corruption: PDP group attacks Buhari

– PDP Youth Frontier has described the freezing of governor Fayose’s account by EFCC as an attempt by President Buhari to weaken the PDP

– The group described Buhari as an unrepentant dictator

– The PDP Youth Frontier coordinator said PDP is currently undergoing reform and that will unseat APC

Is President Buhari plotting to crush PDP?

A group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), PDP Youth Frontier has described the freezing of the Ekiti state governor’s account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as an attempt by President Buhari to weaken the PDP.

Speaking with our reporter in a telephone interview, Autin Okai said the anti- corruption campaign of President Buhari is clearly manifest that the same dictatorial tendencies manifested during the military regime of 1984.
Recall that the EFCC froze governor Fayose’s personal account in Zenith Bank account. But according to Okai, the action is because he’s the leading opposing voice speaking against Buhari and the APC lead Governmen

“Freezing of governor Fayose bank account is a move targeting and weakening the PDP. Linking him with Arms probe is categorically and orchestrated by the APC , investigation of Fayose is politically motivated and targeted at leading opposition figures,” he said.

Speaking further, he said APC has designed and perfected plans to destroy the leading opposition party “knowing fully well that it has failed to deliver on it owns campaign promises sensing the facts that PDP is set to takes over power in 2019.”

“Since Buhari got into power, the EFCC has been targeting at the PDP figures. It is now obvious that President Buhari is still a dictator and his anti-corruption crusade is a sham, hypocritical and double standard and selective.”

The group leader however added that PDP is still in support of the fight against corruption but “unfolding events have confirmed our position that this administration is only using the anti-corruption posture as a tool to witch-hunt PDP members and perceived political opponents of APC government. Femi Fani Kayode has been silent and languishing in the cell by the Buhari Government in the name of the war against corruption despite the facts that the accused has meet all the bail condition.”

He said PDP is currently undergoing reform and that will unseat APC.

“The on-going rebuilding in the PDP to take over power in 2019, and in as such, Buhari is applying every negative means to decimate our great party, including the relentless victimization of our key members.

Presidency reacts to Fayose's comment on Aisha Buhari

– Presidency says it would have naturally avoided the comments of the governor
– Exposes his (Fayose’s) ignorance with the allegations
– Challenges him to tell Nigerians if the person he alleged is truly Aisha, the president’s wife

Governor Ayodele Fayose has gotten a response from the presidency over his corruption allegations against Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari.
The Ekiti state governor had on Monday, June 20, mentioned Mrs Buhari’s name in the bribery scandal of US Congessman, William Jefferson, for which he (Jefferson) was convicted in 2009.

In a press statement on Tuesday, Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to President Buhari on media and publicity, stated that the presidency would have ignored Fayose because “he is a man childishly obsessed with the desire to grab the headlines and insulting people at will because of his incurably boorish instincts.”

According to him, the presidency however,
“chose to respond on this occasion for the sake of innocent Nigerians who might be misled by Fayose’s shameless and blatant distortion of facts.”
Speaking further, he said ignoring Fayose carries the risk of giving credibility to the outright falsehoods inconsistent with the status of anybody that calls himself a governor or leader, adding that the president’s wife had no direct, indirect or the remotest connection with William Jefferson’s corruption scandal in the United States.

The presidency therefore challenged the governor to inform Nigerians if the so-called Aisha whose pictures he proudly, but ignorantly shared, was the same as the one married to the Nigerian president.
Meanwhile, prominent Nigerian lawyers and rights activists are expressing divergent views over the freezing of an account belonging Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Fayose has alleged that his rights have been trampled on by the anti-graft agency, but the EFCC says it has the power to investigate and carry out such actions in the course of its duties.
While some opinions support his argument, others think otherwise.

How the Nigerian military stole N70m and mastermind oil bunkering in the Niger Delta

Chief Sheriff Mulade, a community chief in Gbaramatu kingdom, in Warri South council area of Delta state, has accused the top hierarchy of the Nigerian military of being the masterminds behind oil bunkering in the Niger Delta region.

Mulade, who is the chairman of the Kokodiagbene community in the kingdom, spoke to our reporter when Afripuze recently undertook a three-day investigation in the creeks of the Niger Delta into issues concerning the continuing military occupation of the area.

Mulade said that the military stole over N70m in cash from the palace of the kingdom, and stole precious objects and valuables from the kingdom.

Chief Sheriff Mulade, a community chief in Gbaramatu kingdom, in Warri South council area of Delta state,
He said that when the military swooped on the community, the people scampered into the forest, allowing the military to have a field day in the kingdom, invading the palace and stealing anything available in the community on sight.
“Who is perpetuating illegal bunkering in the Niger Delta? As an authoritative voice in Gbaramatu and chairman of Kokodiagbene community, I can tell you that the security agents are the perpetrators of illegal bunkering in the region.
“Every five to 10 kilometres there is security outpost. There is security gunboat on patrol everywhere. But in between the gunboats and security outpost, there is illegal bunkering going on. The young men doing it are stooges, they are errand boys to the soldiers, they are looking for daily bread.
“Do you think those village boys can hire vessels? Do you know how much it takes to hire vessels? Do you know much for hiring local cotonou boats? They are owned by the military hierarchy.
“If a junior officer arrests any of those boys, they will have superior call from senior officers, saying ‘leave that one: it belongs to commodore this, commandant that and brigadier general this and that’. Then those of us who stand against them become targets.”

On the issue of theft, Mulade said: “The soldiers stole N70m cash from our palace. We are not saying it because they invaded our community. This is cash kept for the construction of our palace. If you visit Okporoza, our palace is under construction.

Chief Sheriff Mulade

“This is the palace that all the communities in Gbaramatu kingdom are paying royalties to. We are all building the palace collectively. And the money meant for the palace building was the money stolen by the military when they raided the community in May. They also stole valuables from the community worth hundreds of millions and went away with them.
“The money stolen was meant for the kingdom not for individuals. We all mopped up the cash to see that we speed up the building, which is why we have not crowned the new king of the kingdom. If anybody says we are exaggerating the figure, that person is lying.
“The valuable goods stolen are worth millions of naira. There are tools, electronics and palace gadgets. The military went away with all of them and left our community naked.”

In partial confirmation of Mulade’s allegations, our correspondent who visited the community on a fact-finding mission saw the expansive palace grounds under construction, but also saw that the recent military occupation had seemingly caused the people to abandon the construction, as 90 per cent of buildings in the community were abandoned when NAIJ.com visited Okporoza.
All efforts to get reactions from the Military proved abortive.

Rio Olympics 2016: How Team Nigeria is planning to fail

It is an old adage: ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.’ With less than two months to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, Team Nigeria is anything but ready to participate with any prospect of glory in the biggest sporting event in the world, leaving Nigerians concerned and disenchanted.

One would have expected there to be a change in attitude and approach after the embarrassingly empty-handed outing at the London 2012 Olympics. The upcoming Rio Olympics promises to be worse, with the team potentially only coming home with the Zika virus.

While other countries are intensifying, fine-tuning and approaching the final stages of preparation, Team Nigeria is struggling to get funds released for training and preparation, resulting in some athletes seeking out sponsors or exhausting their hard-earned financial resources.

The budgetary hullabaloo has not helped matters, with the budget only released a few weeks ago, leaving the athletes running helter-skelter for a release of funds to at least get a modest six-week preparation.
Moreover, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) added another twist to the shoddy and disappointing preparation saga with the revelation that the sports ministry in Abuja has allegedly failed to release money to pay visa fees for Nigerian athletes expected to jet out to Durban, South Africa, for the African Senior Athletics Championship late next week.

Several appeals by former and veteran Olympians have fallen on deaf ears. The former African queen of the track Mary Onyali raised her fears and anxiety over the nation’s medal prospects in Brazil, due to a lack of planning and preparation, finding solace in prayer instead.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she said: “I am gripped with fear and anxiety that what happened in 2012 may happen again. I am hoping and praying to God. I am not wishing any athlete to fail, but I am hoping and praying that we can win a medal.”

“We have failed to plan to win: we want to win and then plan, and it is not possible. When other nations are planning to win, we are praying.”
“It is going to be a tough battle because you don’t pick a medal. Any medal, even if it is a World Championship medal is not picked, you plan for it.”
“New structure of plans would have been in place to change what was done wrong in 2012 so that we can get a medal but I didn’t see it. That is why I said I am nervous that we may not be able to come back with a medal again and it will be very disheartening and devastating to the country.”
Africa’s most decorated table tennis player Segun Toriola, who has already featured in six Olympics since his debut at Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, and will be making history with his seventh Olympics in Brazil, recently expressed his disappointment at the level of preparation via a statement released through NAN on Wednesday.
He said: “I don’t think we have ever had it so bad like this because even at the last Olympics in London, by this time we had started preparations. And I don’t think any athlete can do much in Brazil.”
“I think nobody should expect much for the athletes because most of our opponents are rounding up their preparations while we have not started.”
“We have to know that it is the biggest stage for every athlete career, and all those that have been winning Olympic medals had quality preparations.”
For Nigeria, a nation of over 170 million people with vast resources, to be reduced to praying, rather than being on foreign soil, camping, training and preparing is a sad and shameful development. After all, we are only due to compete in eight sports, including football, basketball, canoeing, table-tennis, track & field and wrestling.

Considering President Buhari released N2.9 billion last year for the 2015 All Africa Games and the Olympics, the question therefore is, what has happened to the N640 million that Mallam Alhassan Yakmut, the director general of the defunct sports commission, said remained after the All Africa Games?
The minister of youth and sports development, Solomon Dalung, also expressed his disappointment at the level of preparation by athletes five months ago, pledging to make an effort to speed things up, but less than eight weeks to the Olympics, preparations are crawling rather than speeding up.
“Having qualified, you need to train very well because you’re going to face other qualifiers. Do your best in training and aspire to dominate your opponents during the games.”

“Our camping will be in two phases. Since we’ve not been able to improve on our facilities, we will make use of what we have for the first stage which will soon be over before exposing you to the second phase which will be outside the country. I believe that the state of our facilities will be better before the next Olympics. Do not be discouraged because all your sacrifices are for the country. I wish you well and we will consider training tours that will be of comparative advantage to all athletes,” Dalung assured.

Recall that Fayose relived a scandalous controversy on Monday, June 20, stressing the role played by ‘Buhari’s wife’, in a messy bribery scandal involving Williams Jefferson, a US Congressman. The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to the US Department of Justice’s website holding court documents where ‘Aisha Buhari’ was alleged to have transferred suspicious funds to a convicted former American congressman, Williams Jefferson.
Nawa oo, what does she want to gain from all these?

Scandal! Fayose attacks Buhari, exposes dirty secret of first lady

– Governor Ayodele Fayose has spoken out again regarding Aisha Buhari’s role in a bribery scandal
– The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to US Justice department showing evidence of funds transfered by Aisha Buhari
– Fayose claims that Buhari is as corrupt as those he is witch-hunting
Fayose relived the controversy on Monday, June 20, stressing the role played by Buhari’s wife, in the messy bribery scandal involving Williams Jefferson, a US Congressman.

Governor Fayose says President Buhari is a corrupt man.
The Ekiti state governor distributed a link to the US Department of Justice’s website holding court documents where Aisha Buhari was alleged to have transferred suspicious funds to a convicted former American congressman, Williams Jefferson.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said President Buhari was far from being a clean man.
“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel,” the governor said, in reaction to the freezing of his Zenith Bank account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read.”
The governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Lere Olayinka, later circulated links to and copies of the court document detailing Mrs Buhari’s mention in the scandal.

The documents showed that in some of the exhibits tendered in convicting Mr. Jefferson of bribery, Mrs. Buhari was mentioned as transferring $170,000 to the American politician using a firm as proxy.

“Government Exhibits 36-87 (6/26/02 $170,000 wire transfer from account in Nigeria in the name of Aisha Buhari to an account in the name of The ANJ Group, LLC, identifying “William Jefferson” as Beneficiary),” the US Government Sentencing Memorandum said on page 22.
Aisha Buhari could not be reached for comments. And Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, declined comments, saying he would need to check the documents himself before issuing an official statement.
Fayose’s comment sparked a recollection of how Mr Jefferson, between 2000 and 2005, used his position as member of the U.S. House of Representatives to offer illegal services to private companies for cash rewards.
Premium Times reports that Jefferson and his family, according to US authorities, received about $367,500 through through his firm, ANJ Group, for services rendered to iGate, an American broadband technology provider.
An indigenous firm, Netlink Digital Television, had signed a joint venture with iGate to set up digital satellite TV and broadband Internet services in the country. NDTV was owned by Oyewole Fasawe, a PDP chieftain at the time.
Mr. Jefferson was contracted to help promote iGate and NDTV partnership in Nigeria.
Following a lengthy trial, Mr. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Although Mr. Fasawe was arrested in 2005 by the EFCC, he was never convicted.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were also said to be a person of interest in the allegations.
A final report released by the EFCC on June 22, 2006 about the bribery scandal also contained Mrs. Buhari’s Citizens Bank account statements and how she transferred funds to Mr. Jefferson.
A 2007 New York Times’ article detailed how Mrs. Buhari told an acquaintance in Washington that she was a daughter of a former Nigerian head of state and a friend of Mr. Jefferson.
“As the pair struck up a conversation and subsequently became friends, Mr. Assiba, then a security guard, said she told him that her father was the former military ruler of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and that her American friends included politicians like Mr. Jefferson of Louisiana.”
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has frozen the personal account of Governor Ayodele Fayose.
A source was also said to have disclosed that the governor’s account in Zenith Bank in Ekiti as well as those of some of his associates were also frozen by the anti-graft agency.
After visiting the bank at Onigari, GRA area of the state capital, Fayose described the action as illegal and while citing section 308 of the 1999 constitution, the governor stated that the federal government should fight corruption within the ambit of the law, since he enjoys immunity as a sitting governor.
He said: “I got mind of the fact that the EFCC had placed restriction order on my personal account and that of my associates. I came here today and I have been able to see it. This action shows that this government has no respect for the constitution because I enjoy immunity under Section 308.
“I support government fighting corruption, but it has to be within the ambit of the law . You can investigate me, it is their right, but they have to wait till 2018, because I will be done by then. They should not be in a hurry because I will personally come to them for investigation.”
In reaction to Fayose’s comments, the EFCC has said that immunity does not stop the commission from investigating suspicious account belonging to any governor.
The anti-graft agency was reacting to the claim that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state cannot be investigated because of immunity currently being enjoyed by him.
Speaking to Vanguard, Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, said the immunity being enjoyed by any governor does not prevent the commission from investigating suspicious movements of money into their accounts.
Fayose has lamented the undue interference in the internal affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the government and security agents.
Speaking shortly after a meeting held by the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) with governors and the Makarfi-led caretaker committee in Abuja on Thursday, June 16, Fayose alleged that there was a strategic effort to destroy the PDP in Nigeria.

The governor however expressed confidence that the leadership crises currently rocking the party will soon be over.

“Help Please! My Girlfriend Wants To Kill Me With Too Much S*x”

A man whose girlfriend is obsessed with s*x has cried out for help as he cannot cope again even after taking s*x enhancing drugs.
He cannot match his girlfriend’s insatiable desire for s*x and has begged for advice on how to cope.

Read his story below:-

My girlfriend has a higher s*x drive than me (big bummer I know), the other day we were watching the show Louis and one of the characters said “Sometimes I just want to go home, eat a burger, and hit the sack.”
She casually told me that she hopes that never happens to me. She wasn’t mean about it, but it kind of got to me because I am like that. I work 7 days a week and sometimes I just want to watch tv and sit back.
I’ve been drugging myself with all sorts of libido enhancers just so that I can perform even when I am exhausted.
I am 22 and most guys would love to be in my situation, but between my full time job, full time school, and my real estate business I just get worn out.
Is there something wrong with this? Should I want s*x every single day?

Presidency Plotting Coup Against National Assembly – Senate Raises Alarm

The Senate has raised alarm that the presidency is plotting to gag the legislature and force leadership change in the National Assembly.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, in a statement, alerted Nigerians and the international community, ‘that our democracy is in danger and that the attempt by the Executive Arm of the Federal Government to gag the legislature and criminalise legislative processes in order to cause leadership change in the National Assembly is a return to the era of impunity and lack of respect for due process which we all fought to abolish’.
Read Full Statement:

“After reading in the national newspapers and online platforms of the planned charges of forgery and conspiracy preferred against the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, his Deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa and the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Ben Efeturi and reviewing the circumstances leading to the filing of these charges, we are compelled to alert the good people of Nigeria and the international community, that our democracy is in danger and that the attempt by the Executive Arm of the Federal Government to muzzle the legislature and criminalise legislative processes in order to cause leadership change in the National Assembly is a return to the era of impunity and lack of respect for due process which we all fought to abolish.

We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to please call his Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, to order. The Senate of the Federal Republic voted freely to elect its leadership into office and continuing attempts to change that leadership through the wanton abuse of judicial processes cannot stand in the eyes of the world. It is clear that the Attorney General and party leaders behind this action either lack the understanding of the underlining principles of constitutional democracy, the concept of Separation of Powers, checks and balances and parliamentary convention or they just simply do not care if the present democracy in the country survives or collapses in their blinded determination to get Saraki and Ekweremadu by all means necessary, including abuse of office and sacking the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Nigerian people have enough economic hardship at this time requiring the full attention and cooperation of the three arms of government, instead of these attempts to distract and politicise governance. We are in a state of economic emergency such that what the National Assembly needs at this time are executive bills and proposals aimed at resolving the crises of unemployment, currency depreciation, inflation, crime and insecurity.

What the National Assembly needs now are executive bills to build and strengthen institutions to earn revenues, fight corruption and eliminate waste. Instead, we are getting hostile actions aimed at destabilising the National Assembly, distracting Senators from their oversight functions and ensuring good and accountable governance. We must make it clear here to the individuals in the Executive arm and party leadership behind these plots not to mistake the maturity and hand of co-operation being extended to the Presidency by the legislature as a sign of weakness.

The National Assembly bent backwards to accommodate various infractions and inefficiencies in pursuit of inter-arms co-operation and national interest. We did not follow up the various infractions because we believe there are bigger issues which the government has to attend to in order to ensure that every Nigerian have food on his table and live comfortably in a secure environment. We know that the country is actually in a state of economic emergency and all hands must be on deck.

This latest plot is directed at forcing a change of leadership in the Senate or, in the extreme case, ground the Red Chamber of the National Assembly. Or how do one interpret a move in which the two presiding officers are being set up to be remanded in Kuje Prison or incapacitated from sitting at plenary through a day-to-day trial on a matter that is purely an internal affair of the Senate. This obviously is a dangerous case of violation of the independence of the legislature, undue and unnecessary interference in the internal affairs of the Senate and blatant abuse of the judicial process.
The matter now being criminalised was brought to the plenary of the Senate in session, over a year ago. And because it had no support, it was overruled and roundly defeated in chambers. To now take a matter that was resolved on the floor of the Senate to the police and then make it form the subject of a criminal prosecution of freely elected legislators beats all imagination of free thinking men all over the world.

The implication is that any matter that fails on the floor of the National Assembly will now be taken to the Police, thereby endangering every Senator and House member. This current move clearly runs contrary to the Doctrine of Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances which are fundamental to the successful operation of the Presidential System of government. It runs counter to the principle outlined by the Supreme Court in the Adesanya Vs Senate case where it was held that nobody should seek to use the courts to achieve what he or she has failed to push through on the floor of the National Assembly.

This present efforts, therefore, is clearly a coup against the legislature with the ignoble aim to undermine its independence and subject the law making institution to the whims and caprices of the executive. It is a plan to return Nigeria to the dictatorial era which we have, as a nation, voted to reject. It is a dangerous trend with grave implications for the survival of our democracy and the integrity of the component institutions.

This rule of men as against the rule of law is also the reason why the War Against Corruption, one of the cardinal objectives of the present administration, is losing credibility because people perceive it to be selective and, in most cases, aimed at settling political or partisan scores. The Rules of the Senate and how the institution elects its leadership are internal affairs. The Rules of a new Senate are provided by the National Assembly bureaucracy. It has always been so since 1999. After the inauguration of the Senate, if Senators have objections to any part of the Rules, they can follow the procedure for changing it.

Senators of the Eighth Senate have no control on the rules applied in the elections of June 9, 2015 because until after their inauguration, they were only Senators-elect, and therefore mere bystanders in the affairs of the Senate.

We therefore urge all Nigerians and the International Community to rise up and condemn this blatant attempt to subject the legislature to the control, whims and caprices of the executive. If the Legislative branch falls, democracy fails as there will be no other institution empowered by the Constitution to check and balance the enormous powers of the Executive branch. We also call on the judiciary as the last hope to save our constitutional democracy and stand up for the rule of law, by doing that which is right in this case.”

Nigeria Oil Workers Threaten Shut Down In 7 Days

Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, has threatened to shut the nation’s oil sector over alleged anti-labour practices by employers, handing down a seven day ultimatum to government to call the affected employers to order.

“I want to reiterate our demands that the Federal Government and the concern organisations including H15, IEME Chevron, Universal Energy, Chevron Contracts Tecon and Avion Oil and Fugro should resolve the critical industrial relation issues in their companies, particularly in the recent retrenchment in Fugro and Petrostuff should be reversed.
“Let us stated unequivocally that industrial peace in the oil and gas sector will not be guaranteed if these issues, especially the retrenchment in Fugro, are not resolved within seven days effective Monday, June 20, 2016,” he said
